Week 2: 19 - 23 Feb

This past week started with a real bang! At Michaela's birthday party, Liesje and I had discussed going to watch the Maties varsity rugby on the Monday, but Liesje was of the opinion we should not go on the first week. When it came to the actual day however, she had changed her mind and I had very little time to get myself fed and ready to head to the match! In all truth I actually spent very little time watching the match itself; there were far too many other interesting things happening! There were huge inflatable rugby balls being tossed around in the crowd, and free t-shirts being thrown out too. Later, the whole stadium started a Mexican wave which went around at least three or four times. There were sokkie songs (and some other classics like "Sweet Caroline" and "Sister Berthina" being played throughout the game which added to the general vibey atmosphere. Liesje, who was in the process of losing her voice, kept singing along which I'm sure did wonders...

Week 1: 12-16 Feb

All aboard for the first week of classes!  (Sjoe and what a knock-out they were!) The first week seemed to pass incredibly slowly, and by the end of it I was convinced I had never had a recess at all! There were a couple of less welcome surprises, which included having some of our lecturers who we had expected to have again this year swap out. (Incidentally, the plumbing saga and the security problems are still ongoing-- stay tuned 😒) The wobble occurred on a Thursday and to fix it I actually ran to Dana's res in the rain. It was a very effective means of dispelling most of the stress. We watched the spinoff of Downton Abbey with lightsabres, and it was actu...

The Dawn of the Final Year

Image
Hello and a special shout out to whoever (if anyone) is reading this :) I have long debated whether starting up this blog during my final year would be wise. The key issue is whether or not I will have time to properly keep it running. I do not much mind if no one reads it (in some ways I would far prefer that!) because it is meant to be a simple digital journal of my memories of my last year in Stellenbosch. I will try to give a summary of each week's highlights or most memorable moments. I cannot promise these will all be in order I am afraid, so best be forewarned!  Now with that introduction over, let's get to the exciting bit! I have decided to start this story with arriving for orientation (Sarah's that is). I was eager to come back to Stellies as soon as possible so that I could be part of 'Mission Stellenbosch' which the church was running. We ran a few events during the two weeks of orientation, one of which was my very proud suggestion: a board games eve...
