Week 6: 18 - 24 March

This week was mostly an academic one with little to no social happenings. That makes it a relatively uninteresting week I am afraid.  Much of the first half of the week was spent preparing for the Afrikaans test on Wednesday morning. The test itself was relatively short in comparison to the amount of content I had to study. I felt confident that I was able to earn enough marks to pass, but beyond that I have not a clue how it went. I don't really want to think to much about it beyond the fact that it is one more thing off my list.  Other academic happenings include furiously rewriting my entire part of the Teaching Assessment Plan (TAP) because Dr Rock was not quite satisfied with it. In hindsight I entirely agree with her that the second version is more interesting, but it was quite a lot of work and I found myself nearly in tears on Wednesday evening. This may also have to do with my failing an assignment for the first time in my life earlier in the day. I would however rath...

Week 5: 11 - 17 March

The joy of this week was that it was basically one long dance session with academics squished in between!  Not really, but it certainly could have been interpreted that way! On Monday, MBLDS hosted a sokkie social which Talita and I used as an opportunity for our growth groups to meet up. Those available had a picnic supper on a bench on the Engineering grass and then we all walked to Academia together. Jani brought a residence friend along too! On Tuesday, I went to ballroom classes and thankfully managed to catch a lift back with Jess otherwise I would have had to walk home alone in the dark. I had hoped Daneldi would be there too, but it looks like she may not have a schedule that allows for dance classes at the moment.  On Wednesday there were two sokkies happening, one at Kruiskerk and one at Dagbreek. I decided not to go to either after Bible study since I was exhausted. I am not sure why I was so tired looking back, but I know it had to do with a very full academic plat...

Kickstart Camp! (1-3 March)

Image
Where do I even begin to describe Kickstart? It was as one person described the 2022 camp "a taste of heaven". Getting to be surrounded by people with whom one fundamentally agrees, taking in the beauty of nature and laughing and singing together-- is there anything better than that?  I drove to the campsite with George (and all the sound equipment) and discovered that like Helen, he is a fan of the Gray Havens. He also seems to enjoy Switchfoot's music, so all round it was a wonderful trip of singing and chatting. Around the halfway point, George insisted I take over the Aux cable and so we listened to Christi Van Niekerk, Joshua na die Reen and some golden oldies like Mamma Cass and "Lean on Me".  George is such an interesting person to talk to and I feel that in one short hour, I got to know him much better. It was quite interesting to hear about his love of Shakespeare, his time at school, and plans for next year. Hearing about how he came to decide on Min...

Week 4: 4 - 9 March

Things have gotten super busy academically and I find myself feeling guilty when I blog instead of working on assignments. I do think though that this blogging is rather therapeutic and also necessary for keeping me sane. So: Onwards with the weekly recaps/reflections! This week I find myself struggling to remember all that has occurred. I shall blame it on being tired from Kickstart and developing a second cold.  On Monday, I had lunch with Liesje in her flat. It was an impromptu decision on my part which resulted in being spoiled with chicken wraps and hot tea while we waited the rain out. I had envisioned sharing my muffins and munching on a banana huddled under a tree somewhere for shelter, but I am very glad Liesje had other ideas!  Tuesday, as always, held the prospect of ballroom dancing. I have found that I look forward to these sessions more each week. The committee announced that a medal test will be held next term, and I have already decided that I would like...

Week 3: 26 Feb - 1 March

The further I continue with this blog, the more convinced I become that every week is just a whirlwind of activity! On Monday, I landed up having flapjacks for supper with Dana. It was mostly a complete accident, which I now have half a mind to suggest become a weekly plan! I caught her between classes and told her that I had macaroni I wanted to invite her round for sometime, and then somehow that turned into a plan to share a meal together that evening which turned into a flapjack date. Dana did not however have any flour and so I had to go and buy some after classes. Dana is quite an incredible cook. She measures nothing, adds a disproportionate amount of sugar and baking powder, and yet somehow everything comes out excellently. I have now witnessed her make both white sauce and flapjacks and can honestly say she is the most chaotically awesome cook I have encountered thus far in my short existence! We did not have any eggs and so we used bananas instead, but you could never have ta...
