A Very Brief Break (2 - 6th April)

Hello again! 

As I sit down to write this, it is just over two months after the week which is listed as the title. In hindsight, trying to do a weekly blog post may have been a bit ambitious. 

I kept a bullet list to help myself remember what happened in this very short recess week, but in the end this is all it said and I am afraid I cannot remember too much:
  • Waterfront muffins and walks
  • dentist appointment
  • not getting enough work done
  • trying to find a book to read in the library
I believe that "not getting enough work done" refers to the fact that I had two major assignments due when I got back as well as an oral presentation, neither of which I felt I spent enough much time working on at the time when I wrote this list. This year, I tried a very different approach to stress management which involved scheduling regular activities with friends and making the most of opportunities which came my way rather than hiding out in my room ploughing through academics. At times it felt like this approach caused me a lot of stress and FOMO, but looking back now at the end of the semester I actually think it worked surprisingly well and did not cause me any more stress than usual. 

About the Waterfront visit-- Dad, Sarah and I had muffins and hot chocolate at Mugg & Bean to celebrate the end of the term. The views on the harbour were stunning and I took some good photos. We also walked to the helipad to see if we could spot any helicopters taking off (sadly we did not). 

Another major highlight was having tea with Aunty Myrle and her neighbour and getting to see some lovely baby tortoises and hear some good stories. I discovered that Aunty Myrle is a tennis fan but supports Roger and not Djocovick (she calls them by their first names as though they are her nephews). Incidentally, the tortoise in the photo is "Paddy" who grandma and grandad named since he hatched on St Patrick's day about a year or two ago when they were visiting. 

Anyway, here are the pictures from my short recess week in the absence of any cool stories. Hopefully I will have remembered more and taken better notes from the other weeks as I go back and edit the posts now before publishing them. Wish me luck!

Moving to Villiersdorp-- My first week

Wednesday 10th January 21:10 I seem to be rather bad at this "blogging" thing, but since this is my first year teaching, I figure it is worth another shot to try an document an important year.  I moved out to Villiersdorp on Monday morning (as I write this it is Wednesday evening), and had Mom and Dad to help me unpack everything. There was actually rather little to unpack since the garden flat is furnished. Mom & Dad were more necessary for the driving bit, which I would not manage on my own just yet. Just driving the road to school is terrifying. I have never had to travel faster than 55km/h, so to suddenly have to travel in a 100 zone is quite a challenge! I did manage to drive it alone just fine this morning when I went to unpack my classroom though, so I suspect I will get used to it fairly quickly.  Other than setting up my classroom, I have not been up to too much. Week 6: 18 - 24 March

This week was mostly an academic one with little to no social happenings. That makes it a relatively uninteresting week I am afraid.  Much of the first half of the week was spent preparing for the Afrikaans test on Wednesday morning. The test itself was relatively short in comparison to the amount of content I had to study. I felt confident that I was able to earn enough marks to pass, but beyond that I have not a clue how it went. I don't really want to think to much about it beyond the fact that it is one more thing off my list.  Other academic happenings include furiously rewriting my entire part of the Teaching Assessment Plan (TAP) because Dr Rock was not quite satisfied with it. In hindsight I entirely agree with her that the second version is more interesting, but it was quite a lot of work and I found myself nearly in tears on Wednesday evening. All the flight things and Day 1

  Hello everyone, By popular request, I will be attempting to keep you all relatively up to date with my travels and adventures in Israel. Please bear with me because I am new to this and also have an assignment I need to work on while I am away (hooray). The purpose of this blog is mostly to experiment with something new, so your suggestions are very welcome 😊 So without further ado- Here is the summary of the journey so far! First stop: Istanbul Turkey (The airport terminal 1 April) I have very little to say about the airport other than to say that it is huge! Because the stop was so long, I also ended up working on my project at 5am. While I realise for some of you students this is a norm, I cannot say I enjoyed the experience.  I have attached a photo from the flight over.
