Moving to Villiersdorp-- My first week

Wednesday 10th January 21:10 I seem to be rather bad at this "blogging" thing, but since this is my first year teaching, I figure it is worth another shot to try an document an important year.  I moved out to Villiersdorp on Monday morning (as I write this it is Wednesday evening), and had Mom and Dad to help me unpack everything. There was actually rather little to unpack since the garden flat is furnished. Mom & Dad were more necessary for the driving bit, which I would not manage on my own just yet. Just driving the road to school is terrifying. I have never had to travel faster than 55km/h, so to suddenly have to travel in a 100 zone is quite a challenge! I did manage to drive it alone just fine this morning when I went to unpack my classroom though, so I suspect I will get used to it fairly quickly.  Other than setting up my classroom, I have not been up to too much. I have managed some form of exercise every day I have been here though, and of that I am proud. Since...

Liesje Verjaar!

Image
Some of my favourite moments  Prepping the night before-- meeting Jana, blowing balloons, standing precariously on chairs, keeping Lien company in the kitchen and making silly videos  Winning the three legged race with her by far (Clearly sokking together helps us sync up!) Chatting with Jana about how we came to be Christians hearing that lLsa got placement at Clanwilliam my speech going well, even though Anneke and I spoke much longer than Liesje's family (oh well :)) throwing buckets of water over Liesje with Anneke (My idea, but more fun with two because she got twice as wet!) cleaning up while blasting ABBA music and using the bottles of seeds as shakers Liesje scooping me up after I tried to push her over when we took pictures in a purple patch of flowers falling flat on my face when trying to do wheelbarrow races with Jana Liesje getting hoop earrings which looked so stunning on her. Her wet hair becoming volumous as it dried, making her look quite the most stunning gir...

The Flower Parade

Image
A spontaneous decision to go on my own after I knew Daneldi was unlikely to come. I had been feeling rather stuck in a state of overthinking about the future after finishing all the job interviews and being in the postition of having to wait. As far as I can remember, this was the day Liesje sent me a "just breathe with me" voice message, which I played on repeat.  Gina and Bella were there too! What a lovely surprise not to be riding with strangers. Sunflower bikes-- honestly what could be more perfect?! VERY loud drums, but Jade being a complete vibe and dancing along while riding her bike (how she could do both quite escapes me) circling round twice to catch the parade ringing our bells and watching people watch us seeing how proud the kids were (those twirling batons and dancing that is)-- and they should be! Being gifted kombucha as a thank you and buying myself an ice cream on the way home while walking back and chatting with Erin

13 - 19 May "The One With Four Projects Due in One Week"

I existed in a state of constant work but! I did get everything done by Thursday! On Monday I got the email about prac placement (and messaged Liesje so we could open the email together-- guess who is going to Rhenish primary!) I messaged back and forth with Sarah Steele a little which was lovely! Liesje and I made plans to have supper together on the Friday which got me through the week in a big way We had soup and played Spot it. Liesje landed up on the floor trying to fix my bike. We made mug cakes (which nearly jumped out of the cup because of the bicarb we decided to add even though Lieneke said not to) I did washing over the weekend (it piles up VERY quickly-- laundry is as a result of the fall according to a meme I read. We never would be wearing clothes if it were not for eating the apple) Earlier in the day on the Friday before a birthday party, Dana came to finish reading Anne to me while I did the dishes. Tao walked in on the one and only soppy book in the whole book. P...

29 April - 5 May: Medal Test! And other adventures :)

Image
This week was a very full one!  It began with Slobs on Monday (in which among other things-- we got very distracted by the significance of the number seven). Christelle blurted out that it's important because of the seven colours of the rainbow  and seven days of the week (We discovered that she was not in fact entirely wrong about that!)  On Tuesday, I grabbed a lift to ballroom with Liesje and tried to study for my maths exam while she danced the paso doble (I was far too distracted!) I truly cannot believe that she is now advanced enough to dance that! Looking back on videos of the first time I went to watch her dance, it is incredible how far she has come! While I was waiting for Liesje across the hall, Emma from church came over to say hello. She called Liesje's name and waved, but of course Liesje could only see a blob. So she gave a very wrinkled-brow look and wave back shouting "Wie's jy?" Her confused/half-blind face is very adorable, but I do wish she wo...

22 - 28 April ~ Dance Rehearsals and Adventures between academic pressures ~

Image
This week was quite a whopper academically! I wrote an ADLN test, an English test, handed in the philosophy lesson plan and submitted a maths assignment.  To survive all of this, I had to reward myself with going to a sokkie at the end of the week :) The sokkie was "country" themed and we were charged only R10 (instead of the usual R20) if we were dressed according to the theme. In the end, Liesje and I decided that boots and a bandanna counted.  As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed the sokkie! But I had one of those moments where I realised that I was chatting comfortably with people I had not really met before (without Liesje there to back me up). When that happens, I suddenly become aware that I am in fact a whole grown up and that I can pretend to be a proper adult just as well as other people around me.  But I am realising that I have jumped to my Friday-night adventure without writing about Thursday! On Thursday Rachel drove back from service learning at speed in an attem...

15 - 21 April "The One Where the Friends Went Home"

Image
The main event of this week was the long-anticipated visit home accompanied by Dana and Liesje. Having spent the best part of a month counting down to this weekend, I was very excited. There was just one snag to our carefully constructed plan, Dana had forgotten that she would be on door monitoring duty for res that Friday night and was finding it difficult to swap out with someone. So until around three hours before the time, there was a good chance it would just be Liesje and I having adventures in Cape Town.  Before I continue writing about the wonderful weekend with my two favourite people, let me mention a couple of other things that happened in this week. Firstly, I spent some time with Inge from my Bible study. We chose a day after class to meet up and got iced milo shakes from DCM and then walked along the Eerste Rivier until we found a good bench. It was very soothing sitting there in the late afternoon sun just chatting. While we were sat there, we saw a kitten come crawl...
